Leucorrhea

Benefits of Amla/Gooseberry

It is a thick whitish discharge from the vagina and almost all women would get this during reproductive cycle. Although the vaginal discharge will be normally white in colour, for some women it may be yellow or greenish yellow in colour. There are number of factors like hormonal changes, diabetes and anemia which cause leucorrhea. Need to pay attention only if the vaginal discharge is accompanied by other symptoms like itching and redness in the vaginal area. In rare cases this white discharge begun before the first menstrual cycle of a girl.

Types of leucorrhea

Two types of leucorrhea namely –

A. Physiological leucorrhea

B. Inflammatory leucorrhea

Physiological leucorrhea

It is common in almost all women and is caused by defense mechanism of the body for restoring chemical balance. It also preserves to maintain the flexibility of the vagina and the surrounding tissues. It has got its name “physiological” due to the reason that vaginal discharge occurs when estrogen levels are increased.

Inflammatory leucorrhea

It occurs when there is vaginal swelling or congestion of mucosa in that area. Very often the yellowish white discharge gives out a foul smell indicating infection. This type of leucorrhea also includes vaginal discharge caused by STD (sexually transmitted diseases) and due to lochia.

Symptoms of leucorrhea

  • Thick whitish/ yellowish discharge.
  • Lower abdominal pain.
  • Painful sexual act.
  • A backache and pain in the leg. Intense itching of the vagina.
  • Burning urination and frequent urge to pass very little urine.
  • Irritability and lack of concentration in work.
  • Digestive disturbances like constipation.
  • Tiredness due to loss of vital fluids as discharges.
  • Strong smell or frothy discharge and rashes or sore spots on the genitals, etc.

Causes Of leucorrhea

  • Unprotected sexual contact
  • lack of nutrients
  • Poor hygiene
  • Injuries to the cervix or any of the tissues in the reproductive system during pregnancy
  • Urinary tract infection
  • Other infections due to the presence of bacteria or fungi
  • Irritation due to contraceptives that are inserted into the vaginas
  • Irritation due to external contraceptive used by either partners
  • Diabetes or anemia

Diet and Lifestyle Advice

Diet and Lifestyle Advice
  • Drink plenty of water. Stay well hydrated.
  • Eat more of fresh fruits and vegetables.
  • Include bananas, cranberry juice, oranges, lemons, black plums, okra, leafy greens, onions, yoghurt in your diet.
  • Include healthy herbs and spices such as ginger, garlic, fenugreek and coriander in your diet.
  • Eat complex carbs (like whole grains, brown rice, oats, etc), lean protein (fish, yoghurts, nuts, sprouts, etc) and low-fat dairy products.
  • Maintain proper hygiene. Wash undergarments with an antibiotic solution, and let them dry under the sun.
  • Wear loose, cotton clothes and garments.
  • Exercise daily. Start with morning walks daily morning.
  • Avoid stress. Stress and strain since it may affect the hormonal level and may increase secretions. Try yoga.
  • Avoid simple carbs like white rice, white bread, maida, refined products, etc.
  • Avoid foods that will aggravate this problem or increase your chances of getting leucorrhoea so avoid all heavy, oily, fried, sugary, spicy, and sour foods.
  • Avoid tea, coffee, alcohol, aerated drinks.
  • Avoid non-vegetarian food.
  • Avoid wearing tight-fitting clothes.
  • Avoid wearing synthetic or nylon underwear.
  • Home remedies for leucorrhoea.
  • Drink the water residue which is used for the preparation of white rice which is the best remedy to treat white discharge because of heat.
  • Boil a litre of water and add 3 tablespoons of fenugreek seeds to it. Continue to boil till the water reduces to half. Cool and drink a bowl of this water every morning. It has great properties, which can help to treat leucorrhea naturally.
  • Take a glass of water and add a tablespoon of freshly squeezed lemon juice to it. Wash your vaginal area with this water.
  • Wash Vagina with Neem water.
  • Leucorrhoea: Foods to avoid
  • Avoid spicy and fried food completely.
  • Avoid food made of white flour.
  • Avoid white sugar products
  • Avoid tea, coffee, alcohol and other condiments
  • Avoid tinned/ canned food
  • A warm vaginal douche with Triphala water is highly beneficial. Take 20 grams of Triphala powder, add to 2 litres of water and boil for 15 minutes-filter it and use as douche, when it is tolerably hot.
  • Cold hip bath: Similarly a cold hip bath twice a day is also useful in removing the morbid matter.
  • Washing and cleaning of vagina and internal parts with ½ tsp of Processed Alum powder with 500ml water.
  • The decoction of bark of Lodhra is also used for the purpose of douching
