Destructions caused by dengue is more dangerous than swine flu

By: Dr (Hakeem) Aslam Javed

The most parts of our country are strongly hit by the deadly swine flu. Within last two months, it has claimed the lives of more than one thousands. The dangerous epidemic'Ebola' caused grave destructions in the most parts of the world. Hence, dengue got spread in several countries including India in 2006. In a report published in October 2004, it was revealed that to fight diseases like dengue public health institutions lack proper management on a larger scale. It is note-worthy that above mentioned all diseases are considered to be epidemic. It should be kept in mind that swine flu is too a dangerous disease but the graph of intensity and destruction is much more. So it is appropriate to make you aware of the whole report that enables you to figure out how much dengue is dangerous and how we can save ourselves and human generations.

It was the decade of 1950 when Asia, Africa and North America were hit by such a disease in which a person caught high fever as well as head-ache and pain in joints. Others developed pain in their stomach and complained of blood vomiting and dysentery. These patients had been in the same disease for seven to ten days and finally died of. People became scared and started migrating from those regions. After the research, doctors found that this disease is caused by the bite of a particular kind of mosquito. This disease was identified in 1979 and named as 'Dengue Fever'. Dengue is a Spanish word that means cramp or seizure and also called as disease of evil spirit. In 1950, this disease emerged in South-East Asian countries as an epidemic in which thousands of people especially children were killed. By the end of 1990 an estimated four million people were killed. From 1975 to 1980 this disease had become common. In 2002, this disease became epidemic in South-Eastern state of Brazil 'Riode Janeiro' and claimed the lives of over ten lac people, most of them were under sixteen children. It has come to our knowledge that this disease gets spread in every fifth-sixth year. In Singapore, every year four to five thousand people become victim of this virus. In 2003, it killed six people too. Those who once suffer it, they are most and quick prone to it. This is the next form of malarial disease that is caused by the bite of mosquito. The legs of the mosquito of this disease are longer than those of common mosquitos and they are somewhat colourful. They are also born in dirty places and steady water. There is still not invented any kind of patent medicine or vaccine.

Yet, under Pediatric Dengue Vaccine Initiative (PDVI) programme, efforts are being made to invent its vaccine. Thai scientists have prepared the vaccine of dengue virus, that still in initial stage. This vaccine has been experimented on three to thousand individuals and different animals and has born, till date, positive and fruitful results. In 2002, Swiss Pharmacy Company and Singapore Economic Development Board have, in a joint effort, have worked on preparation of medicine to weed out this virus. The only solution to be saved from this epidemicis taking care of cleanliness, germicide and insecticide should be sprinkled in the swamps of dirty water and streets and lanes in order to put an end to the places dengue proliferation. Individually, we can use mosquito net at home in the night and spray mosquito-cides as a safety measure.

Recently, this disease is spreading like an epidemic in different countries of the world. According to media report, from August to October 2006, dengue fever got spread in Dominican Republic killing forty-four people. From September to October 2006 people died of this disease in Cuba. This virus is also spreading in South-East Asia.In Philippines from January to August 2006 13468 patients were found among them 167 were killed. In May 2005, 7200 people suffered ailment and 21 of them died of it. In 2004, 80,000 Indonesian had been victims of dengue, among them over 800 died. In January 2005, it hit 33203 Malaysian people. In Singapore, 4788 people had complaint of this disease in 2003, while 9400 and 13 people were registered to be killed in 2004 and 2005 respectively. It was officially confirmed on 15 March 2006 that Australia had bee also wrapped by it. In September 2006, 70 Chinese suffered it. Dengue killed 38 Cambodians in September2005. In 2005 19,000 Cotsta Ricans faced with this disease, among them one person was reported to be killed. In 2005, the Indian state Bengal witnessed it and 900 people became ill and 15 people were confirmed to be killed. In 2005, 80837 Indonesians caught this fever among them 1099 people's death was confirmed. Malaysia witnessed the ailment of 32950 people in 2005 leading to the killing of 83 people. In Martinique, 6000 people suffered dengue fever in 2005 and 2 people died of it on 2 September. In 2005 too, 21537 people in Philippines suffered it and 280 among them of killed. 12700 Singaporese suffered it and 19 people death was confirmed. More than 3000 people in Sri Lanka became victims of this fatal disease. In 2005, 31,000 Thais became sufferers this disease including those 58 people whose death was confirmed. More than 20,000Vietnamese were found to be victims of this disease amongst them 28 were killed.

Till 8 October 2006, the Indian city of Delhi witnessed886 people falling ill, while in Kerala 713, in Gujarat 424, in Rajasthan 326, in West Bengal 314, in Tamil Nadu 306, in Maharashtra 226, in Uttar Pradesh 79, in Haryana 65, in Karnataka 59 and in Andhra Pradesh 70 people were found to be affected by this disease respectively. Yet, Indian government has refused to declare it epidemic and said that it is taking all kinds of steps and measures to curb this disease causedand got spread by mosquito bite. Former Cabinet Minister for HealthAnbubmani Ramadoss said, in his tenure, that till that time 38 lives were claimed by dengue in all over India. He told that 2900 people had been affected by dengue in our country including those 673 people who had belonged to Delhi. According to him, amongst the 38 killed 15 were form the capital Delhi, 3 from Gujarat, 7 from Rajasthan, 3 from West Bengal and 4 from Kerala respectively. Over all 2900 people had been affected by dengue virus in our country including those 673 people who had belonged to Delhi. This, and according to the Indian government, last year 11900 cases of dengue were recorded and this disease had claimed 157 lives. The number of patients of dengue fever is shooting up. Since, patients are rushing daily to the hospital in a big number and not getting timely and proper treatment;their lives are being claimed by this fatal and malign disease. During such situations, the affected states should adopt emergency arrangements to control this disease. For analysis and test several medical teams have been constituted. According to an Indian report, dengue fever is caused by the bite of a particular kind of Aedes aegypti mosquito. Its symptoms are complaints of high fever, queasiness (biliousness), sulkiness in the body and pain in the back etc. Because of high fever there is risk of brain haemorrhage. According to research report, the dengue affected patients' blood become devoid of red corpuscles (cells), therefore they need red cells. In the country, the problems of scarcity of the machines for removing red cells from the blood and immediate availability of the blood add make the situation more complicated and intricate. According an officer doctor, researching in the institution concerned with the malaria, the mosquito that spreads dengue does not live in the dirt rather it lives in houses. "This mosquito is found in water tank oh houses, bathrooms, or any place where water is put in the bucket, drum or vessels", he said. The dengue mosquito sets out before and after few hours of sun-set and sun-rise in quest of its food. According to him cold and cough, fever, headache, bleeding from mouth and nose, pain in the waist behind the stomach and red pimples on the body are symptoms of dengue virus affecting the body. If it is not controlled immediately, it causes the beginning of dengue haemorrhage fever that could be fatal too. According to a recent report published by UN Health Organisation, there are 38 kinds of dengue virus spreading mosquito are found in nearly 100 countries of the world. 40 % populations is affected by this disease and every year 5o million (5 crores) cases come into being and annually 15,000 people die of it. The report said that it was identified for the first time in 1949 in South Asia and in these regions it got emerged as epidemic for the first time in Sri Lanka in 1989.

To save ourselves and our neighbours, the educated and aware people of the society must carry out vigil campaign. The doctors, medicines manufacturing companies, especially, can contribute a lot. The mosquitos that cause dengue fever get proliferated in still and accumulated water. Therefore, people should not only take care of cleanliness but they also prevent water to accumulate in the open spaces near to the building or its adjoining. It should be kept in mind, that if fever continues for seven days and one feels pain in one's body and bones, he/she should get immediately checked up enabling timely treatment.
